Denovo Audio Sledge M4-18 MDF 4.0cuft Subwoofer Flat-Pack for 18" Subwoofers

Quick Overview

Easy to assemble MDF subwoofer enclosure.

$155.00

Availability: In stock

Details

The Sledge M4-18 is a 4.0 cubic foot sealed subwoofer flat pack made from premium 3/4" MDF which is much nicer than the MDF sold in home improvement stores. It's a heavier weight product that cuts very clean, making it ideal for speaker and subwoofer cabinets. The well thought out interlocking matrix style bracing system allows you to assemble the entire cabinet quickly and easily with no need for screws or nails.

This cabinet gives you a net internal volume around 4.0cuft after subtracting the woofer and braces. Most 18” sub drivers will fit in this cabinet including the 18" Dayton Audio RSS460, Dayton Ultimax, and the Stereo Integrity HT-18 models. If your Stereo Integrity 18” subwoofer has a hard rubber gasket around its outer mounting flange you might have to remove it so it fits easier in the recessed cut out. People usually remove those anyway and use a softer gasket material to get a better air tight seal. Terminals, binding posts, and/or speaker spikes can be shipped for free if you order them at the same time you order this flat pack..

Product Highlights:

  • 4.0 cubic feet net internal volume
  • 1.5" thick front panel
  • Well thought out interlocking braces designed for extra cabinet strength
  • Made from premium highly refined MDF that meets all Carb 2 requirements
  • CNC cut for incredible accuracy
  • Rabbet joints and dado grooves help align panels for easy assembly
  • Can be used as a downfiring subwoofer by installing legs on the front panel

Note from Denovo Audio: We promise you ‘No Fluff’. When building any subwoofer cabinet it’s important to know what you’re getting, so we’re upfront about everything. We clearly state the net volume on all of our cabinets so you can make a more informed decision. 'NET' is the true internal cabinet volume after subtracting off bracing and ports. Don’t be fooled by other company sales tactics or over exaggerated claims.

Every flat pack is precisely cut using a $400k industrial CNC router so panels fit together perfectly in rabbet joints and dado grooves. There's no sloppy assembly with our cabinets. In fact, cuts are so precise that some people have assembled them using nothing but strong masking tape to hold the panels together while the glue dries. Denovo Audio flat packs are incredibly popular because of their accurate cuts, thoughtful designs, and premium grade wood.

I was blown away by the great packaging and simplicity of these boxes. I ordered 2 and was able to glue the first one together faster than it took to break down the cardboard and dispose of the packing materials. You do not need much skill to assemble these! It was extremely simple to put together and afterwards I feel like you could drop it off a roof and it would stay together.

Bought two of these for a pair of Dayton Ultimax 18" subwoofers. This was my first DIY audio project and it was as straight forward and easy as it gets. The CNC cut pieces fit together with near perfection and zero slop. Once the glue dried, the box was incredibly strong and very well designed. My pair of Ultimax subwoofers sound solid in these boxes with zero noticeable flex or air leakage that I can tell.

I'm now fully sold on the concept of DIY audio and am looking on building at least two more of these to add to my home theater setup.

I used this kit for my Dayton Ultimax 18. I was originally going to have a buddy of mine build my box for me, but the time this saved us BOTH was INSANE. It's foolproof, requires little to no tools (great for first time DIYer's without a ton of clamps/saw/routers, etc).

The box is about as sturdy as it gets. The Ultimax 18 in this box took all my bridged Crown XLS2000 could take and didnt move much if at all. This is due to proper bracing and panel construction resulting in little to no vibrations, ensuring all your power goes to making sound instead.

I've since gone a route that requires custom boxes, but this is my first recommendation for anyone looking to DIY a good box that doesnt have a ton of tools handy, or a budget to buy them.

I purchased one of these flat packs for my Dayton UM18 sub and the packaging job was the best I have seen from any on-line retailer. They used a well thought out method of strapping the panels together and an abundance of styrofoam to protect the MDF in shipment rather well... so no worries there.

The fit and finish is second to none and the precise CNC cuts make it a breeze to put together with wood glue and a handful of clamps. A close inspection of the seams after glue up indicated that it should be air tight, but I used caulk to seal the seams for peace of mind. I finished mine with Restore 4X tinted black and used a 4 Pole Neutrik connector for the speaker cable.

The finished product looks great and I'm seriously thinking about picking up a second one as the time the flat pack saves in sourcing the MDF, measuring, rechecking, cutting and cleanup is well worth the selling price. If you're on the fence, don't think twice... buy it!

As the reviewer above noted, skipping the steps of designing, then buying, hauling and cutting the mdf for the boxes makes the job so much easier (been there, done that). And the flat pack was precision cut, heads above what I could of done at home.

I used Titebond II glue with a bristle brush to spread, 24" wood clamps and also smaller Quick Grips clamps where needed. I do recommend using clamps to assemble these, as they will squeeze out the excess glue and make a tighter fit.

Thanks again to Erich for the great product and service. Now that I built one box, plan on doing second for a pair of Ultimax 18" subs.

I put together two of these bad boys for some Subs. I'm not done yet but I have managed to glue them up. They are so perfectly cut that I only needed titebond wood glue and painters tape. First I ran my fingers along the wood channels where the glue would go to make sure they are clear of any dust or packing material debris. Then i dry fitted the whole box to make sure the panels are in the right way. The top and bottom panels are not a perfect square (as its designe), so it's important to dry fit to see which way they go. Then don't over do the glue, put a bead on he bottom piece keeping about an inch from the ends. Pop in the two braces and finally the third brace to fit on top of them. Press down and you'll see some glue squeeze out. If it comes out the sides, wrote it away. It's important to wrote it away because now you will reassemble the box with the remaining pieces without glue, line up all the edges by hand and them use your painters tape to tape up all corners. What you are doing is letting the box itself BE your clamps. When dry, t she the tape off and the remaining dry pieces. Now we are going to glue all the sides on. Put glue where ever MDF will touch MDF keeping the top piece dry. Wipe away any glue that might touch it. Then put the top piece in place and use your fingers to line up all the panels, keep checking the corners and seems to get them as close to perfect as you can, then use painters tape to hold them in place. When dry, pull the tape and then inspect the inside. Squeeze glue into any seams you can see inside, its ok to use your finger to drag it up and into place. Then put the glue down for the top piece and put it back into place, it should be a tight fit. Line it up with your finger and let it dry, hold it in place with painters tape. Finally use lots of glue on the backside of the baffle and put it on top. Line it up with fingers. Put weight on it. Done.

Ordinarily I wouldn't dream of buying a flat pack because I enjoy the woodworking aspect of building speaker boxes. Unfortunately a torn Achilles early in the year has me a little hobbled, but I still eagerly wanted to build a new HT sub. After picking up an Ultimax 18 from PE I weighed my options. The idea of all that work suddenly seemed more daunting and that it was a perfect time to try a flat pack.

I received the kit in just a couple days and it went together in another two without a hitch. As others have noted, everything came EXTREMELY well packed. The precision cuts are fantastic. I was very impressed. Kudos to Erich all around.

Anyone with limited time or mechanical means should definitely consider one of these kits. It really is a great deal when you consider the time and mess you'd otherwise have in a project like this.

    Highly recommended!

There is a reason these have nothing but 5 star reviews, they are EASY to put together and you end up with one hell of a good value. Very tight tolerance on the cuts, the panels fit together perfectly. My OCD won't allow me to use tape, just a bunch of clamps and letting every panel fully set before removing them. Still, they went together with just a few minutes per panel whenever I had time. I managed to get a few of the sides slightly out of square during assembly but a very quick touch with a belt sander yields a box with perfect edges all around. I haven't even bothered to put the Duratex on them yet because they honestly look pretty good as is.

Finally, and most importantly, after building these I ordered a pair of volt 6's for my business and am probably going to order some volt 10's for my shop. I like these DIY kits and would recommend them to a friend.

I've originally ended up with this same enclosure when I ordered my 18" Dayton RSS460HO subwoofer as a kit. It's been quite some time since, when I ended up going with the dual opposed enclosure flat packs that were for sale here on DIYsoundgroup. It was my first flat pack assembly and it sure was a good learning experience.

I recently decided to re-use this enclosure, and I ended up having ordered another one that fitted the Stereo Integrity drivers. The reason being, because the JBL 2242H drivers fit the baffle cut for the SI drivers perfectly with some space to spare. I had to modify my original enclosure to make it fit.

I didn't want my original enclosure to go to waste and I wanted a second matching enclosure which made life easier. =)

The boxes are totally top notch. They go together very easy. Just "dry-fit" them first and make sure the to put them together in proper order. I used Titebond 3 wood glue, excellent. I also used ratchet straps and some gym weights to apply some pressure to the pieces as they dried. I only did a section at a time to ensure proper curing time of the glue. Erich, can you upload the sequence of installation panels onto your site here? I know it's on the avs forums, unfortunately, I can't find it to post a link at this time. Thanks! BTW, I have a qty. of 6 18" SI Subs in my home theater. Stop thinking about building your own and just order these! You will thank me!

A fellow member from the Klipsch forum directed me here to start my first diy sub, and I'm glad he did.

Thank your sir for your fine quality product. I wasn't aware that this is only a hobby of yours, and after finding that out I was blown away. The pieces for the 4 cu ft sub are cut perfectly. I ordered the cut for the 18" Stereo Integrity drivers, and they just slide right into the cutout for them. I started off with just two boxes, however I will be ordering two more once I have a bigger room to allow such monster subs. Thanks again.!

These things are worth every penny. After putting together two of these and two Tempest flatpacks I'm convinced that short of owning a CNC there's no way to get the quality of fitment these things provide. Everything fits like a glove. Grab a half dozen 24"-36" bar clamps from Harbor Freight and some TightBond II and you'll have it done in a couple hours (letting things set up between steps).

I ordered 4 of these flat packs and it is so simple to build your own subwoofer box!!

All the panels go together easily and the sub slides right in. I like the fact that I can place the threaded binding posts wherever I want...for my situation, I have a tight fit behind my AT screen/false wall and have mounted the posts on the top of the box.

    Thanks again Erich!!

Go to Lowes, get a big piece of MDF, screws, glue, new saw blade, filler and a lot of sand paper. Spend many hours cutting, sanding and making a big dust bowl mess out of everything.

    or

Buy a couple of these flat packs and a SW of your choice. Open bottle of wine to enjoy while building. Open well packed precut pieces of MDF (very well packed), lay out pieces, glue them up, bam! your done. Make sure that you get a couple of sips of wine down before you build, because they way that these kits are designed you could finish a kit before you finish your wine.

Really good kits and an easy build with your son, spouse, daughter or significant other. CNC cutouts remove all the hollering, cussing and screaming.

I just received both of my flat packs for my drivers. A lot of time, effort, and material went into boxing up these bad boys.

I've only opened one box so far (drivers are on back-order still and not in a rush). Everything was bundled/tied/padded to keep all the pieces from flying around and getting royally beat up. We all seen the videos and know how rough some of our shipping companies can be! :)

    Well worth it!

I purchased 2 of these with cutouts for the Dayton 18in HO driver. Packages arrived very quickly after shipment and were packed extremely well. These go together just as easy as all the flat-packs from this site. Dado joints make assembly a breeze using wood glue or PL., no need to nail/screw.

Once assembled boxes are extremely solid, bracing is prefect and makes for a very ridged (and heavy) box. MDF is high quality and easy to finish. Driver cutout is perfect, Drivers fit in with no play and perfect spacing all around .

General Information

 Brand: Denovo Audio Inc.
 Model: Sledge M4-18
Material: Highly Refined Carb 2 MDF
 Width: 20 inches
 Height: 23 inches
 Depth: 20.75 inches
 Gross Volume: 5.3 cubic feet
Net Volume (approx): 4.0 cubic feet
 Outer Cutout: 18.285"
 Inner Cutout 16.85"
 Weight: 65lbs

Recommended Tools:

  • Clamps that open as big as the longest side of the flat pack.
  • A mallet (or a small piece of wood and hammer) to lightly tap pieces into place if needed.
  • Quality wood glue like Titebond. Some people use PL adhesive.
  • Sandpaper or sanding block for smaller cabinets, but a power sander speeds things up a lot.
  • Some prefer to use brad nailers for quick assembly, but clamps are just fine with no need for nails or screws.

Assembly Notes:

This is an easy cabinet to assemble and can be done a few different ways.  Believe it or not the panels go together so good that some people have assembled these just using masking tape to hold the panels together.  That's actually what they do in cabinet shops as well.  My directions probably make it sound a bit harder than it actually is, but once you have the panels laid out, you'll see how easy it can be done.  My directions assume you're using a wood glue like TiteBond, Elmers wood glue, or something similar.

Sit the back panel up on something to keep it a few inches off your work bench.  This allows the head of your clamps to fit under the panel so you can clamp the other pieces to it much easier.  Glue the braces in first and add a little glue where they interlock. While clamping them down, make sure they stay between the rabbet joints cut around the rear panel and wipe away any glue that squishes into those grooves so the other panels will still lay in okay.  After about 30 minutes, remove your clamps.

Next you want to install the top and bottom pieces.  These also fit perfectly between the rabbet joints just like your braces did. Make sure you put glue where they touch the bracing.

After you have the top and bottom on, I prefer to install just *one* side panel, then I will glue on the inner baffle next.  I've seen people install both side panels but that will be harder to apply glue and push the inner baffle into the cabinet.  So I just do one side panel, then install the inner baffle making sure you have glue every place two pieces of wood meet.  Let that dry pretty good.

Without adding glue, fit the remaining side panel in place.  Depending on how hard you clamped things down earlier, this could need to be tapped into place with a mallet, or a small block of wood and hammer.  Make note of where you need to apply the wood glue, remove the side panel, apply the wood glue where needed, then tap the panel back into place and clamp it down.

Last piece is the outer baffle.  Just put a bead of glue around the edges, then around the woofer cutout, then just drizzle it around the rest of the areas.  Lay the baffle on.  It will slide around a little bit, but don't worry.  Lightly tighten your clamps down while working your way around the box shifting the baffle into position.  If you have a small clamp, you can use it inside the woofer cutout to clamp the inner baffle to the outer baffle.

Tips:

  • Dry fit all pieces together first so you can see how the cabinet is suppose to assemble.
  • Don't rush your build. Glue one or two panels at a time to make assembly accurate and easier.
  • Use a quality wood glue and put a bead of it anywhere two panels touch.
  • Clamp each panel for at least 30 minutes, then move to the next step. (depends on adhesive used)
  • Don't over-clamp your panels.  Tighten your clamps enough to hold the panel in place.
  • If you're going to add any filler to the seams, sand the edges down flush before adding filler.
  • Predrill your woofer screw holes with a 7/64" or 1/8" drill bit.
  • Protect your woofer when installing screws. You don't want the screw driver to slip and puncture the woofer!
