Continuing a Legendary Woofer:  As we all know from the website, DIY Cable-Exodus sadly closed it's doors. The 7" Anarchy woofer that Kevin designed is an excellent woofer or midwoofer with it's massive 25mm peak-peak xmax.  I'm happy to say that Kevin agreed to let me keep this little beast in production from the same manufacturer, same specs, and using the same materials as before.  Kevin helped set up all the ordering to make sure everything was identical. Some people have asked why they aren't $93 like they used to be.  There was a large group buy preorder set up to continue the production and I told everyone involved that I would keep them under $70 for as long as I could.

Minimum order is two. Limit is 4 right now.

Product Highlights:

  • Class leading linear excursion with 12.5mm X-max.
  • Works well in ported or sealed enclosures.
  • Great bass and midrange response allows for true full range 2 way designs.
  • Also works very well as the woofer in a 3 way design.

Woofer Videos:  When the Anarchy woofers were first introduced Kevin made two videos.  The first was an introduction video, the second video is Kevin powering the prototypes while giving a bit of information about them.

Excellent woofers, with fast + tight response. Really nice as a mid/bass as well. 0.7 cu/ft Tuned to 68hz is super punchy and kicks sound amazing.

Great !! Thanks DIY S.G. I look forward to receiving my 3rd pair for a a pair of 3 way towers im building.

  2. No better 7" woofer review by AJ on 12/29/2020

Despite it's age, I have yet to see the Anarchy bettered by any 7" woofer for <2kHz application, sealed, vented, open baffle or cardioid. Still the LF output champ with a Klippel verified 12mm xmax. Aluminum cone means zero resonances in pass band with low audible distortion. Competent filtering required, so as always YMMV.

I bought both the 4 ohm and 8 ohm. I mounted the 8 ohm first in the rear deck of my car. The amplifier supplied 150 watts RMS at 4 ohm. I used a Harrison 30hz high pass to avoid damaging lows. The 8 sounded good but the gain was maxed on the amp so I knew that it could handle more. Mind you I do not listen to music super loud. If that is your goal you will have to use a sub with much more surface area. I installed the 4 ohm next. I turned the sub amp off and then adjusted the music to sound it's best (the other speakers are amped). I set the crossover on the amp to about 125hz. Then I set the music to my normal listening level and started adjusting the gain on this sub. I turned it up till it filled in the bottom bass nicely. This woofer has a lot of excursion but you want to be careful using it in IB like I am. I have been using it a few weeks now and it sounds great. I sound deadened the rear shelf and will be working on sound deading as much of the rest of the car I can. The best part is this Anarchy can do the bass duty nicely without distortion till I can make the car more quiet.

I bought two of these guys to use in the Anarchy tapped horn enclosures. It's amazing how much bass they produce for such a small driver. These little guys are monsters.....I couldn't believe how robust and substantial the driver was when I received my package. I'm sure some good speaker designs will come about as a result of these, but I'm very happy using it as a sub for living room where I can tuck it behind the AV stand. Just awesome!

I first bought a couple of Anarchy woofers when they were still being sold by DIYCABLE with ideas of building some little subwoofers. After purchasing them though, I started having grander aspirations of building some floorstanding monitors with them. I decided on building the Ansonica (designed by CJD) and realized I would need 2 more woofers. Fortunately, DIY Sound Group came to the rescue and put them back into production.

I'm very pleased with these woofers. They have a very clean midrange and, with their large excursion, pump out plenty of bass. I have one Anarchy left which is a 4-ohm model. Perhaps I'll have to pick up a tapped-horn flat pack to play with it as a sub :)

I will be putting up some recommended enclosure sizes and tuning frequencies soon.

Frequently Asked Questions:

* Can I use this as a subwoofer?  Answer:  People have used these as small subwoofers for 2.1 music systems.  They aren't really recommended as home theater type subwoofers that need to reproduce bass down in the low 20hz range or less.

* Can I use this as an IB subwoofer in my car?  Answer:  No, they really weren't designed to play 35hz and down in an infinite baffle set up.  I have seen this done before, but it's not really recommended.

* How much power can these take?  Answer:  Power handling depends on the enclosure it's installed in and the frequencies the woofer is being fed.
