  1. Great speakers, that do well with no subwoofer. review by John D. on 10/21/2022

I've been using these for music mostly, and they sure are a treat.
They sound great, get plenty loud for my needs, and they don't need a subwoofer for music.
If you need a moderately sized, full range set of bookshelves, you can't go wrong with these.
Thanks for another great design, and product.
Looking forward to listening to these much more.

I have 2 of these in my living room next to a kitchen with no acoustic treatments of any kind. These speakers sound fantastic. When I made these, I had already convinced my wife that I would need to buy a subwoofer but I don't need one and I think it might make things worse.

  3. Great upgrade to Hi-Fi sound review by Zach on 5/20/2022

I've built a few DIY designs, including Overnight Sensations. I was looking for large master bedroom stereo speaker set that would be an upgrade from the OS design. These are primarily for music, although I might occasionally hook them up for a movie.

These MT's are BIG and HEAVY for bookshelf speakers. Not a bad thing, but be aware of the size and since they are ported in the back, they will need to come out from the wall some to function well.

The flat pack and circuit board were extremely convenient and I'm glad I went that route for the construction. I was eager to listen and haven't finished the cabinet yet, but my plan is to order some veneer and stain them.

It took a couple weeks to dial in the setup. I find that in my room, the sweet spot is fairly narrow to get the best imaging, but the dome design is pretty forgiving in general and they can be enjoyed off-axis as well for casual listening. Because of the 4 Ohm design, I got an Emotiva TA-1 integrated amp to drive them, not wanting to risk damaging an AVR or cheap amp. The MT design goes louder than I will ever listen on less than 100W, so I'm glad I did not get the MTM design for my use case.

I got some listening fatigue at first, but I think it's my fault as it happens every time I get new speakers. I think I tense up too much? Some people call it "breaking-in". After a few weeks of occasional listening I now have no discomfort at all and really enjoy them with no regrets.

I listen to a lot of Classical and Soundtrack music while I read or work, and these speakers excel at that, especially with good recordings. The extra bass extension into the 30's is really amazing - no sub needed for my liking. All the music I tried sounded terrific - I wouldn't say it is a subtle improvement, it's a really pleasant surprise how much better everything sounds, how much more REAL each instrument and vocal sounds. The only exception is when you come across a badly-recorded or highly compressed recording; it is readily apparent that something is missing from those recordings. This is exactly what I am looking for in a Hi-fi setup.

I did try these in a nearfield speaker setup on my desk, and found them to be too big for that kind of configuration. Maybe if you have a huge desk it would work, I just couldn't get far enough away to make an equilateral triangle, or the speakers would be too close for my seated distance. This is fine as they sound almost TOO good for background listening and I would never get any work done if these were playing at my desk all day.

I definitely recommend the Apollos as a worthwhile upgrade if you are on the fence about moving to a design that uses higher-end drivers. Even with the cost of buying an external bluetooth amp and stands, I still feel justified that the cost is worth it and would make the purchase again. My spouse was a bit hesitant at first given the large size of the speakers, but after a few listening sessions we agreed that the speakers would become permanent fixtures in our room.

  4. Awesome Bookshelf Speakers! review by M4BGringo on 3/27/2022

I was looking for a set of bookshelf speakers for my computer room. I have other DIYSG speakers so I figured why not stick with them. I chose the Apollo speakers, bought the flat pack also to make the process go quicker. I veneered the enclosures, looks really nice. These are heavy bookshelf speakers! They weigh 25 pounds. Actually heavier than the tower speakers I had them on for testing when I had finished them. I am using these with a sub. There are people that may like the response without a sub, but I am a bass junky. Even my big towers get used with subs.

  5. Did not disappoint review by yz400 on 12/4/2018

I bought the pair of MTM Apollo's along with the MT for the center channel. I had a blast building these. I purchased the crossover board that I still assembled and I believe that is the way to go. Anyone with the skills to do the project in the first place could build the crossover with that board and the instructions provided. I glued, clamped, sanded, primed, painted, etc these until they were exactly what I wanted. Then I assembled the speakers into the boxes. Taking my time on all of it, I still completed all three of them in a little over a week. I was on vacation though so I had some extra time but definitely doable in a couple weeks time.

I also was building the overnight sensations at the same time and I finished them first. I was very impressed with them and when I hooked up the Apollos, I was not disappointed. These things will get uncomfortably loud. I think they actually sound better the louder you crank it. I have not set them up with my TV surround sound setup yet but that is why I bought them. These things will blast and I am very happy I bought them and did this project. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a high powered speaker that will impress.

  6. Apollo MT, Outstanding monitor review by Matthew on 10/15/2018

These are great bookshelf sized monitors. Very dynamic and good bass response as well. About as big as I would consider a "bookshelf" speaker. Perfect for a 2 channel stereo system that is minimalist but still has bass and impact. Great with a 2 channel receiver and a flat screen monitor. Stream your heart out with music and movies. These are all you need.

Specific Apollo-7 MT Assembly Notes:

Your enclosure should be built with 3/4" thick material with one horizontal "window pane" style brace to the dimensions listed.  It is recommended that you lightly stuff your enclosure with polyfill without blocking the ports. The original port is telescopic with an extension.  You don't need the extension at all, just the inner section.  I will likely start shipping them without the extension tube so it doesn't cause any confusion.

Recommended Tools and Supplies:

  • Quality wood glue like TiteBond.
  • At least 2 clamps 26" wide or bigger.
  • Soldering Iron and solder unless there is an optional assembled crossover for your kit.
  • Wire cutters
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill to predrill all screw holes.
  • Sanding block or power sander.
  • About 8' of speaker wire to connect your woofers and tweeter to the crossover board.

General Tips:

    Crossover Assembly:

  • VERY IMPORTANT - Inductors are the parts that look like small rolls of copper wire. Notice that the two ends of wire are silver and have been 'tinned' with solder. Those are the parts of the inductor that you should be soldering to, so don't cut it off to get to the copper colored portion.  Inductors should not be installed directly next to each other on your board.
  • None of the crossover parts have a positive or negative side so it doesn't matter which way they are facing when you assemble your crossover. 16-18 gauge wire is thick enough to use for your crossover or to go from your crossover board to the woofer or tweeter.
  • Your crossover can be assembled on a thin piece of MDF or pegboard if the kit doesn't come with a circuit board.
  • It doesn't matter where you put the crossover inside your speaker.  You could mount it on the outside if you wanted to.
  • Normally you wire red wires to positive and black wires to negative.  If (and only if) your crossover schemtaic has a note saying 'Inverted Polarity', that means you need to connect the negative from the crossover to the positive on the tweeter and positive from the crossover to the negative on the tweeter.  This is only done on some tweeters, not woofers.
  • Click Here for a good assembly video by Matt Grant.

     Screws and Gaskets:

  • Predrill all screw holes with a bit that's slightly smaller than your screws to prevent the wood from splitting.  Most screws are #8 panhead and you can use a 7/64" or 1/8" drill bit.  Overnight Sensations use a #6 panhead so you can use a 3/32" bit.
  • VERY IMPORTANT:  Protect your woofer or tweeter when installing screws because you don't want the screwdriver to slip and puncture one of your components....that will ruin your day!  Consider putting your free hand next to the screw to cover up the edge of the woofer or tweeter.
  • If your kit comes with gasket tape, it should be applied to the back of the waveguide. Peel the paper off the back to expose the sticky side and slowly work it around the perimeter on the back side of the part.  Some woofers will need gasket tape as well.

Stuffing or Lining the Speaker Cabinet:

  • If your speaker or subwoofer is a sealed cabinet, most designers recommend that you lightly fill the inside with polyfill (pillow stuffing).  If you don't have polyfill, then you can line the walls with 1" - 1.5" thick light weight open cell foam (like acoustic foam) or fiberglass insulation.  You can also use 2-3" recyled denim insulation that can be bought at Home Depot.
  • It's okay to cover up your crossover with the polyfill, insulation, or foam.
  • If you're using a ported enclosure you should lightly fill the cabinet with polyfill and be sure not to block the ports.  If you do not have polyfill then line the walls with 1" - 1.5" thick open cell foam (like acoustic foam), 2" - 3" of denim insulation, or 2" - 3" thick poly batting.
  • Some of the speaker designers like to lines the walls of their ported enclosures with a 1" - 1.5" acoustic foam, and then lightly fill the remainder of the cabinet with polyfill.  If this is a required method, it will be listed at the top of the page under 'Assembly Notes'.
