Gotta give it to Pete on this one -- I can listen to it for hours. Combo of the Dayton RS100-4 and the Wavecor TW013WA01 tweeter crossed at 5kHz is perfect. And enough bass (reinforced by being on my desk) that I don't need a subwoofer for low level listening.
highly recommend! You can see pics of my finished build (I even put a bluetooth amp into one speaker enclosure) here:

I bought the ION 4 plus kit as a first time DIY-er, hoping to start small with my foray into DIY audio. Two weeks later I'm thoroughly impressed with both the kit and myself. I had tons of fun building the kit and the materials provided made the experience less daunting for the first time builder. The provided circuitboard and flat packs made construction doable for someone without many tools or space.
The sound quality of the kit is nothing short of astounding. The speakers sound much much larger than they look. While the nearly 3.5 inch drivers wont fool anyone into thinking that these magically hit sub-bass levels, they comfortably hit 60Hz with no issues. The imaging is superb and the wavecor tweeters really complete the kit with exceptionally smooth sound. These easily beat the pants off of any off the shelf speakers of comparable size.
The ION 4 plus is perfect for someone with a smaller room or shared spaces as they excel at playing at lower volumes. If you're a bass head you may want to tack a subwoofer onto your kit. For a small space or desk environment, there's no better way to start your DIY audio journey.
I bought these to use as computer speakers. They arrived well packaged and their small size, prebuilt crossovers and flat packs made this a very easy build. Given their size, the clarity and detail is amazing. I set them up in my living room to test them out. Powered by an older Onkyo receiver, they sound great at normal listening levels and can easily fill the room. The bass is decent but they would be better with a sub. I have 2 other sets of small diy speakers and I like these the best. I can’t wait to finish my computer setup and use them nearfield. Thanks Erich and Pete for a great design.
