A Joint Project with Eminence:  We needed an extremely powerful woofer that could dish out brutal amounts of midbass.  But we also wanted fairly high sensitivity while maintaining a flat frequency response so it could be used as the woofer in large 3-way speakers.  It turns out that's not an easy woofer to find.  So I asked Eminence for their help and of course they came through for us once again and produced exactly what we needed. After some prototypes were made up the engineer thought of a couple modifications that would make this woofer one of a kind.

Product Notes:

This 12" woofer was designed to have good sensitivity, very high output, and the ability to work in a wide range of enclosure sizes both ported and sealed. It also has a smooth response up to 800hz. Their sensitivity is 3-6db higher than a normal subwoofer along with an impedance peak in the upper bass region which leads to virtually no thermal compression. A single woofer is capable of reaching nearly 120db when used as a midbass module or as the woofer in a 3 way speaker design. Please look in the Helpful Notes tab for enclosure recommendations.

Product Highlights:

  • A very versatile woofer that can be used in many different enclosure sizes.
  • Works well in ported or sealed enclosures.
  • 1000 watts power handling.

Woofer Videos:  Ryan from Impulse Audio tested a pair of Denovo Magnum-12 woofers in the following video. It's definitely worth watching.

  1. Direct replacement for Community SBS-12 or VBS-112 review by AcousticTheory on 8/2/2023

I have some compact small-box PA subwoofers from Community that originally used a very similar driver made by Eminence (cast frame, paper cone, roll surround), but when I bought them (used), they did not have the original drivers, which are no longer made. The Denovo Magnum-12 has the perfect set of parameters to be a drop-in replacement in this enclosure, and it has even more Xmax and more power handling due to the larger voice coil. The sound is impactful, and these subs are strong to 45 Hz. Community also made dual-12 and a rare quad-12 version of this series of PA subwoofers, so if you have any of those enclosures in service, consider the Denovo Magnum-12 as an upgrade.

  2. I've tried many 12" subwoofers and this one has the most impact. review by shrub0 on 12/11/2020

I've tested a number of 12" subs on the diyaudio forum https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subwoofers/360855-tale-12-subwoofers-distortion-15-dollars.html

This is by far the best of the 8 subs I tested for 40hz and up. It does well with quick impulses like drum hits.

I've tried sealed, vented and passive radiator and the passive radiator with a low tuning sounds the best to me.

    Highly recommend!

Recommended Uses:

Below are a few different enclosure sizes you can build. Keep in mind that you will need two 3" diameter ports or a single 4" Precision Port. A slot port should be about 15 square inches of area (like 1.2" x 13").

* Deepest extension: 70 liters (2.5cuft) tuned 36hz will give an F3 of 35hz and an F6 of 31hz. This would be good for the bottom of a 3-way full range speaker.

* Midbass Module: 50 liters (1.75cuft) tuned around 40hz. This is a good all around size to dig fairly deep and give a lot of output.

*Optimum Ported: 45 liters (1.55cuft) tuned to 45hz will give an F3 of 45hz and an F6 of 39hz.

* Small Ported: 28.5 liters (1 cuft) tuned to 45hz will have an F3 of 58hz and an F6 of 47hz. This will allow for very small 3-way speakers able to keep up with even the largest subwoofer systems.

* Sealed: 28.5 liters (1cuft) will give an F3 of 80hz and an F6 of 62hz. This will allow for very small dual woofer 3-way speakers that can handle massive amounts of power.

Frequently Asked Questions:

* Can I use this as a subwoofer?  Answer:  People have used these for subwoofers for 2.1 music systems.  They aren't really recommended as home theater type subwoofers that need to reproduce bass down in the low 20hz range or less.

* Can I use this as an IB subwoofer in my car?  Answer:  No, they weren't really designed to play 35hz and under in an infinite baffle set up.

* How much power can these take?  Answer:  Power handling depends on the enclosure it's installed in and the frequencies the woofer is being fed.
